7 Aralık 1978’de Oslo, Norveç’te dünyaya geldi. HBO’nun ünlü fantastik dizisi Game of Thrones’da canlandırdığı Tormund Giantsbane karakteri ile tanınır. Babası ve kuzeni de oyuncu olan Hivju, klasikleşen bilim kurgu filmi The Thing’in 2011 yapımı yeniden uyarlamasında, festivallerde ses getiren yapıtlarından olan Turist filminde, Buz, Kar ve İntikam filminde ve sevilen seri Hızlı ve Öfkeli 8’de rol aldı.
